Coal Miner
Through a MacArthur foundation project to study regional populations throughout Illinois I had the opportunity to travel the state to explore its diversity on film. The
challenges faced by Illinois coal producers have contributed to economic uncertainty throughout the southern portion of Illinois. This image was made as the miner emerged from the darkness at shifts end. When the minor took a moment to rest I framed the shot from a distance and quietly waited for the image to present itself.
