Through a MacArthur foundation project to study regional populations throughout Illinois I had the opportunity to travel the state to explore its diversity on film.
While shooting in Chicago near days end I noticed a businessman in a trench coat briskly crossing the street. I made one exposure as he lit a cigarette. I found it ironic that he had in tow the book In Search of the
Miraculous. The book recounts P. D. Ouspensky’s first meeting and
subsequent association with George Gurdjieff. It is widely regarded as perhaps the most comprehensive account of Gurdjieff's system of thought available.
